Meneaufile

A multi-panel file manager that shows both ends of the same job without switching windows.

The Meneaufile window: two panels side by side, with the bar of drives, modules and quick access above each one.
Two panels side by side — up to nine if the screen allows —, and above each one the bar of drives, modules and quick access; at the bottom, the free disk space.

What it can do

The conventions of two-panel file managers, the ones you keep in your fingers: the function keys act, right-click opens a single menu, the same everywhere.

1 to 9 panels

See both ends

Nine layouts, from a single panel to a grid of nine. The mullion between two neighbours — the bar Meneaufile is named after — moves their split, and each layout keeps its own proportions. The active panel is outlined on all four sides: you always know where you are typing.

SSH

A server as a folder

A remote server over SFTP on SSH is browsed from the keyboard like a disk: read a file without downloading it, copy both ways, rename, delete. Nothing to install at the other end, and the password stays in the encrypted vault.

F3

Read anything

Text coloured by language, rendered Markdown and HTML, CSV tables, images, PDF, video and sound through mpv, and everything else in hexadecimal. Search within the file, full screen, next file without closing.

F8

Compare two files

Line by line, both versions side by side, with changes highlighted. A binary file says so instead of showing noise.

F9

Compress your way

zip, tar, tar.gz, tar.bz2, tar.xz, and the self-extracting archive on Windows. One archive per item if you like, a password on the zip, and the option to move the originals into the archive.

F10

Back up as a mirror

The destination ends up strictly identical to the source, anything no longer in the source being removed. The list is shown first: a backup that deletes without warning cannot be undone.

F11

Synchronise

The two panels compared file by file, with one arrow per line that a click cycles through. When the dates are equal and the sizes differ, nothing is proposed rather than overwriting at random.

Search

Find it, and stop

Eleven criteria: content, PDF text, a regular expression, depth, dates, size, the X largest, smallest, newest or oldest files. Stopping the search keeps what has already been found — you work in it.

Queue

One task at a time

Every long action takes its turn: two copies on the same disk go slower than a single one. The title bar button shows progress, the list says what comes next, and you can force, advance or cancel a task.

Windows

Feels at home

Native shell context menu, recycle bin, clipboard shared with Explorer, drag and drop from the desktop, system icons, Windows properties.

Twelve modules, browsed like folders

A server, a database, a Git repository, a mailbox, a password vault: in Meneaufile everything opens as rows and columns, and the same keys work on all of them.

NETA single list of entries: servers (FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, S3), machines to take over (RDP, VNC, SSH, TeamViewer), sites and passwords
MAILIMAP and POP3 mailboxes: folders, messages, attachments
MTPPhones and tablets connected over USB
GITRepositories: changes, branches, history, conflicts
SVNSubversion working copies
FLUFlutter projects: devices, console, commands
BDDMySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL: tables, rows, queries
PSProcesses, their memory, their command line
SRVWindows services: status, startup, dependencies
TASKScheduled tasks: the Windows Task Scheduler, systemd timers and the crontab, created and edited in place
REGThe Windows Registry: keys and values edited in place, export and import as .reg
SAFAuthorised folders, on Android
The NET module
The MAIL module
The MTP module
The GIT module
The FLU module
The DB module
Processes and services
Scheduled tasks
The Registry
The mailbox of a mail account: reading on one side, sending on the other.
A mail account is declared once; the mailbox is then browsed like a disk.
The history of a Git repository: the commits, their author, and the branch graph in the gutter.
The history of a repository, its graph in the gutter: two branches and the merge that joins them.

See before deciding

What you can look at without opening anything else: a file, and what fills a disk.

The viewer on a Markdown file: headings, lists and table rendered.
The viewer renders Markdown and HTML, colours code, reads PDFs and plays video — without leaving the window.
The usage of a folder: each area is a subfolder, its surface is its size.
“Disk usage”: each area is a subfolder, its surface is its size. One click goes down into it.

Three situations

What a day with it looks like.

You bring a project back from a server

The left panel shows your working folder, the right one the SFTP server. F11 compares the two, tells you what changed on each side, and you choose line by line what goes and what comes. Nothing moves until you have seen the list.

You back up to a USB stick

F10 aligns the stick with your folder: what was added or modified is copied, and what you deleted disappears from the backup too. The deletions are listed first, because that is the part you cannot undo — and the stick ejects itself at the end, if you asked for that.

You are looking for where a value comes from

The log opens with F3, coloured, with its search and its occurrence counter. Two clicks later, the MySQL database is open on the relevant table, sorted on the column you care about. And the server password, you pick it up from the vault instead of hunting for it elsewhere. Without leaving the window.

A manual, in the app and here

Twenty-nine pages in English, with their screenshots: everyday gestures, each module, the shortcuts, the settings, and what has limits. The question mark in the title bar opens it from the app.

Download

Windows, Linux and Android. The same version, released on the same day.

Windows 10 and 11

The portable version unzips wherever you like — a USB key, for instance — and keeps its settings and data in its own folder: nothing is written to the PC you run it on. It does not update itself — come back here.

Android

The APK is installed by hand: Android will ask you, once, to allow installs from your browser. It is not on the Play Store, so it does not update itself — come back here.

Linux

Two forms: the AppImage, a single file you make executable — no installation, no root rights —, and the Debian package for those who prefer apt and want a menu entry maintained by the system.

# x86_64: the AppImage, one file, nothing to install
wget -O Meneaufile.AppImage https://meneaufile.novaclic.pro/download/linux-x64
chmod +x Meneaufile.AppImage
./Meneaufile.AppImage

# x86_64: or the Debian / Ubuntu package
wget -O meneaufile.deb https://meneaufile.novaclic.pro/download/linux-x64-deb
sudo apt install ./meneaufile.deb

# 64-bit ARM (Raspberry Pi 4 and 5 on a 64-bit system): the Debian / Ubuntu package
wget -O meneaufile.deb https://meneaufile.novaclic.pro/download/linux-arm64-deb
sudo apt install ./meneaufile.deb

# 64-bit ARM: or the archive, libraries first
sudo apt install libgtk-3-0 libsecret-1-0 libmpv2 libepoxy0
wget -O meneaufile.tar.gz https://meneaufile.novaclic.pro/download/linux-arm64
tar xzf meneaufile.tar.gz
./meneaufile/meneaufile

The x86_64 packages are built on Debian 12 — the oldest still-supported system that carries Flutter, and therefore the widest reach. The 64-bit ARM packages serve the Raspberry Pi 4 and 5 on a 64-bit system, and other ARM machines running Debian or Ubuntu.

Release notes — what the latest one brings.

PlatformFormStatus
Windows 10 and 11 (x64) Installer, in Program Files Available
Windows — Light version The same installer, thirty megabytes lighter Available
Linux (x86_64) AppImage, or .deb package Available
Linux (ARM64) .deb package, or .tar.gz archive Available
Android APK, outside the store Available

The Windows installer goes into Program Files, for every account on the machine, and therefore asks for administrator rights. Uninstalling removes what it installed, and nothing else. The Light version does without video, sound, PDFs, the password vault and mail: it can be carried on a stick and run on a machine that is not yours, without leaving secrets behind.
