Columns

You drag the edge of a header to change a width, and arrange the columns in “Choose the columns”. A click on the header sorts; a second one reverses.

What sorting does with folders

Folders are grouped at the top, and stay among themselves in ascending alphabetical order — whatever the column and whichever the direction. Their size is unknown until it has been calculated and their date says little, whereas the name is what you look them up by.

The “Folders follow the sort” setting (Settings → File listing) makes them obey the column like files: that is what you want after clicking Date precisely to see your recent folders first.

An entry is not a folder, even if it opens like one. In the lists of NET, BDD and MAIL, a connection is browsed like a folder — its path is the very real one of its starting folder on the server —, but it is sorted with the files: it is a target, not a filing place. Only the filing folders, the ones you made to store your entries, stay at the top.

Their order

Right-clicking a header opens Choose the columns: each line is ticked to appear or disappear, and dragged to change its rank. The whole line can be grabbed — there is no handle to aim for.

The Name column stays first: it carries the icon and the selection.

Except in a table: there, the columns come from the query, and their order is that of the SELECT. Arranging them by hand would make a setting that the next query would erase. The fixed lists of a database — the connections, the tables — are arranged like everywhere else.

A setting that can apply to this folder only

A folder of photos does not need the same columns as a folder of code. The dialog asks when you close the setting: for THIS folder only, for all lists that have the same columns, or for all folders.

Each source has its own

A server shows the address and the protocol, a machine its state, a table its fields, a process its memory, a service its startup type. The source declares them, and the list bends to them without knowing anything about them.

In a database, F12 switches between a table’s data and its structure: two sets of columns for the same row of the list.

Text size

The List text size setting changes the density: rows and icons follow. It is the setting to touch on a very high-resolution screen, before any other.
